School Counselor Sophie Speidel and School Psychologist/Academic and Learning Support Specialist Melissa Taylor recently presented "That's Not Love" at the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) Health and Wellness Summit in Richmond.
Centered around the theme "From Taboos to Talking Points," the Summit featured keynote speaker Judson Brewer, M.D., Ph.D., director of research at the Center for Mindfulness, and author of The Craving Mind: From Cigarettes to Cupcakes to Smartphones, Why We Get Hooked & How Mindfulness Helps Change Habits. It also offered an array of workshops led by VAIS schools' faculty members, on topics from vaping to eating disorders to sexuality.
Speidel and Taylor presented their afternoon workshop on the Upper School's Peer Mentor program, allowing participants to learn how peer mentors are trained and prepared to lead group discussions, participate in mock training, and brainstorm ways to fit peer education into busy school schedules.
Notes from the presentation are now available on the Counseling Office's webpage.
