In honor of November serving as National Picture Book Month, sixth grade students hosted picture book story times with both first grade students and Kindergarteners in the Legner Learning Village Library. In addition to having the opportunity to read aloud their favorite books, the sixth grade students were also able to create their own "picture books" in the form of artwork drawn with the help of their younger buddies.
According to the Children's Book Council, author and storyteller Dianne de Las Casas co-founded the month-long celebration with her team, saying "In this digital age where people are predicting the coming death of print books, picture books (the print kind) need love. And the world needs picture books. There's nothing like the physical page turn of a beautifully crafted picture book."
This year's Picture Book Month Champions included:
- Sudipta Bardan-Quallen
- Mike Curato
- Julie Gribble
- Kathryn Otoshi
- LeUyen Pham
- Matt Phelan
- Mo Willems
- Paula Yoo
In addition to the multi-grade story times, School Librarian Sarah FitzHenry also celebrated the month with displays of books that teachers, staff members, and parents remembered as their favorite stories from childhood. The books are still on display in the Learning Village Library.
Photos from the picture book parties are now available on the School's SmugMug account.
