Backpack Buddies Fills 50 Bags for International Rescue Committee

Backpack Buddies, the nonprofit founded by St. Anne's-Belfield School student Lucia Hoerr '18 during her fourth grade year, has donated 50 backpacks full of supplies to the International Rescue Committee (IRC).

The organization fills backpacks with school supplies for local children, usually at a value of approximately $100 per filled bag, and the backpacks donated to the IRC have already been distributed to students new to the area from countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Colombia, and Syria.

In its first year, Backpack Buddies distributed 61 filled backpacks in the Charlottesville area, this year it distributed almost 400 throughout the region and state.

"The School has been so amazing in all my efforts," Hoerr noted in a recent video interview. "All the students and teachers here help me every year."

Fellow student Kellie Booth '18 was the catalyst for Backpack Buddies' partnership with the IRC, suggesting it due to her family's relationship with mentoring a refugee family.
