Mrs. Virginia Stokes Honored on 100th Birthday

On May 21, 2019, Mrs. Virginia Stokes, longtime Belfield and St. Anne's-Belfield School employee, was honored with a Board of Trustees resolution on the occasion of her 100th birthday. The resolution text appears below.

Whereas, Mrs. Virginia Stokes helped the headmaster's wife with office duties during the summer of 1955, immediately before Belfield School's first academic year, and

Whereas, Mrs. Stokes officially began her employment at Belfield in the following year as the School's part-time Secretary/Bookkeeper and "nurse" at a rate of $1.00 per hour (without even a typewriter to use), and

Whereas, Mrs. Stokes ran Belfield School's Business Office until 1974 and then became Business Manager for St. Anne's-Belfield School, serving in that capacity until 1981, and

Whereas, Mrs. Stokes served as Alumni and Middle School secretary from 1981 until her retirement in 1991, when the new Middle School opened, and

Whereas, Mrs. Stokes has consistently demonstrated her commitment to Belfield School, St. Anne's School and St. Anne's-Belfield School by helping in whatever way necessary, including:

  • Making use of her University of Virginia degree in education to serve as a substitute teacher;
  • Helping clean the building after school in the years before the School could afford housekeeping services; and
  • Keeping costs in line to build a reserve fund that headmasters could use to address faculty needs for supplies and support; and

Whereas, Mrs. Stokes was unflaggingly generous to faculty, providing them with a kind word, needed advice, guidance and support, and

Whereas, Mrs. Stokes found a way to simultaneously act with bluntness and resolve and at the same time project optimism, generosity and fondness that built lasting relationships with students, faculty and parents, and

Resolved: The Board of Trustees of St. Anne's-Belfield School honors Mrs. Virginia Stokes on her 100th Birthday on May 21, 2019, and thanks her for her many years of commitment and generous service to St. Anne's-Belfield School and the school community.
