Announcing Lisa Keeler, M.Ed., as Head of the Lower School

January 19, 2020

From Head of School Dr. Autumn A. Graves

It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Lisa Keeler as permanent Head of the Lower School, effective January 1, 2021.

Ms. Keeler joined the St. Anne’s-Belfield community in 2004 and has served in many capacities including a homeroom teacher, long term sub, curriculum coordinator, instructional coach, and interim Head of the Lower School. It is no wonder that in 2015, Ms. Keeler was honored with the Diana Edwards Smith Teaching Mastership, the School’s highest teaching award in an academic year. That same year, Ms. Keeler had the pleasure of seeing her oldest daughter, Frances ’15, join our storied ranks of alumni, followed the next year by her younger daughter, Claire ’16.

Seeing St. Anne’s-Belfield from the perspectives of a parent, teacher, and administrator these past 16 years has given Ms. Keeler a deep appreciation for the School that few can match. She has an unwavering commitment to our mission of inspiring and preparing the next generation of exemplary citizens and visionary leaders.

I am more passionate than ever about working with young children and their teachers, to create programs that celebrate and encourage the innate curiosity, sense of wonder and interest in play that young children possess. -Lisa Keeler

Ms. Keeler graduated from Middlebury College with a B.A. in American studies, receiving her M.Ed in mathematics education from Virginia Commonwealth University. Prior to coming to St. Anne’s, she taught at Beau Pre Kindergarten in Charlottesville, Collegiate School in Richmond, and Beauvoir School in Washington, D.C. She participated in the Columbia University Teachers College Writing, Leadership and Coaching Institutes. From 2016 to 2017, she co-authored Two Writing Teachers, a blog for writers that today boasts nearly 86,000 followers. She has also served on her church vestry and as a member of The Women’s Committee.

I am continually amazed and humbled by Ms. Keeler’s vitality and approach when it comes to delivering an innovative education to children from age 2 to grade 4. Children at this age possess such an innate curiosity for  how the world works. They have a delicate sense of wonder that we as adults too often take for granted. Ms. Keeler cherishes and preserves children’s joy in learning, providing a rich environment at St. Anne’s-Belfield where every child feels valued, safe, and can explore. In the words of one of our first graders during a rousing round of recess kickball, “We'd pick Ms. Keeler to play on our team!” As the Head of School, I am honored to pick her for my team. And as a parent of two Lower School students, I cannot imagine a better person to lead our youngest learners.
