Athletic Training

Training Room
Monday - Friday: 2:00 - 6:00 p.m.*
Weekends: As required by athletic schedule
*Students can see the Athletic Trainers before 2:00 p.m. by making an appointment via email. Morning hours vary by day and by season because of the varying evening schedule. Closing times vary and can be as early as 4:00 p.m. for game/event coverage.
Traveling coverage is only provided for Varsity Football.
The training room is named in honor of the School’s long-time team pediatrician Dr. Vito Perriello, Jr. Dr. Perriello dedicated much of his life to the health and safety of young athletes. He gave selflessly of his time and talents to the athletic training room and sidelines. Not only did he provide excellent care to the School’s student-athletes, but he also helped shape the Sports Medicine program. His support set a standard for exceptional care, which continues today.
Team Physicians
After graduating from St. Anne’s-Belfield, Dr. Perriello attended Princeton University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree while playing field hockey and lacrosse. She earned her medical degree from The George Washington University School of Medicine, and then completed her residency at Children’s National Medical Center. Following residency, she practiced as a staff physician at Children’s Hospital in Boston for two years before returning home to join Pediatric Associates. Additionally, she serves on the U.S. Lacrosse Sports, Science, and Safety Committee.
Dr. Thomas Schildwachter has served as St. Anne’s-Belfield School’s orthopedic team physician since 1980, while also serving as an assistant coach for the Varsity Boys’ Lacrosse team. He attended the University of Virginia where he played soccer and was an All-American defenseman in lacrosse, and continued at U.Va. to complete medical school and his orthopedic residency.
Dr. Schildwachter has served as a team physician for the U.S. U-19 Lacrosse Team in Australia and the U.S. Lacrosse Team at the World Games in Canada, alongside the School’s long-time team pediatrician Dr. Vito Perriello, Jr. He was inducted into the State of Virginia Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2000. Dr. Schildwachter is affiliated with Martha Jefferson Hospital and has been in private practice in Charlottesville where he has continued his interest and passion for athletics in the Charlottesville community.

Athletic Development
The program was created with the underlying belief that this increased fitness is achieved by developing dynamic postural alignment and balance, through use of optimal, not maximum, loads, and with an eye to quality, not quantity. In short, training movement, not muscles.
Expectations & Concentrations
Grades 5 & 6
Grades 7 & 8
Grades 9 - 12
- All fundamentals of training have been covered
- Perform movement screen for athletes as they enter grade 9
- Volume and intensity of weight training and conditioning will be increased
- In season athletes will be seen once a week on the field or in the weight room
- Two optional days will be available to use the weight room for in season athletes
- Off season training will be offered four days a week throughout the school year
- Summer program will be offered for all athletes
Chad Powlovich is the director of Athletic Development. He holds a master’s in education and an bachelor's in exercise science from the University of Vermont, where he was also a four-year member of the basketball team.
Prior to relocating to Charlottesville, the former Gatorade Player of the Year served as director of Sports Performance at Poulin Performance where he trained many of the area’s best high school, college, and professional level athletes in all sports. Chad also spent time as the strength and conditioning coach for the St. Michael’s Womens' Basketball and Mens' Soccer teams, the Nordic and Far Post soccer clubs, the Lone Wolf basketball organization, and the Colchester Cannons baseball team.
He holds certificates in:
- Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS through the National Strength and Conditioning Association)
- Performance Enhancement Specialist (through the National Academy of Sports Medicine)
- CPR and AED trained
