Congratulations to the Varsity Squash team on taking first place in the 2020 HEAD U.S. High School Team Division VII Squash Championship Tournament!
The team traveled to Hartford, Conn. Feb. 21 - 23 to compete in the annual tournament and came out on top in the Division VII classification after defeating the Park School of Baltimore (4-3), City Honors Squash Team (5-2), and Princeton Day School (4-3).
"We had some very hard fought matches and it doesn't get any closer than a match score of 4-3," noted Head Coach Russ Sterling. "Captain and senior Myles Mascotte dug deep to bring home the deciding match. He was down 0-2 and then came back to level the match at 2-2. He then found himself down 7-9 in the fifth and rattled off four winners to seal our Championship. I tell me my players, I care most about two things, our sportsmanship and we never quit fighting, and that exactly what Myles did."
Mascotte went 2-1 during the tournament, and several players including JR Bauer '21, Alec Freedman '21, and Cescah Grazioli '20 won all of their individual matches.
"Going to Squash Nationals is always the highlight of our season and it's when our team always plays its best. The team really grows over the season and to take home the championship is a great pay off for all the time, travel, and practice we put in," said Lucas Piller '21, who played number one during the tournament.
Great job, Saints!
