Thunder of Horses Photos and Video Now Available Online

On Wednesday, May 8, the Middle School choirs performed a concert with a Native American theme. After a prelude of Native American songs performed by the fifth grade (including a hoop dance), the sixth grade choir and Saintly Voices joined together to perform Thunder of Horses, a children's opera with music by Cary John Franklin and Michael Patrick Albano.

The opera is loosely based on a Blackfoot legend which explains the origin of the first horses through the story of Long Arrow and Willow Flower, two orphaned children. Over the course of a long journey with many challenges, Long Arrow is transformed into a young brave who brings the rare and valuable gift of magnificent horses to his people.

The concert featured special guest artists including Chris Owens, baritone; Shelby Sander, pianist; I-Jen Fang, percussion; and Elizabeth Brightbill, flute player.

Ivan and the Firebird Photos Now Available Online

Seventh and eighth graders will share their dramatic talents in performances of "Ivan and the Firebird" on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27 at 7:00 pm in the Learning Village Auditorium. Admission is free.

This fast-paced and amusing play tells the tale of the chase to catch the fabulous Firebird and release her from the wicked Czar Vyslav. The Czar, who is nagged incessantly by his wife over their country's shortcomings, is overjoyed when his gardener, Simeon, produces an apple tree bearing golden fruit. Before he can use this miracle to his country's good, the golden apples are stolen by the Firebird. Vyslav's sons undertake the retrieval of the apples, and the victor is promised that he will be heir to the throne.

A Cappella Fest 2013 Photos Now Available

On Saturday, April 20, St. Anne's-Belfield School hosted the fifth annual A Cappella Fest. Local high school a cappella ensembles had the chance to work with two guest groups, Hoos in Treble from the University of Virginia and The Spizzwinks(?) from Yale University.

The evening concert included performances by nine different groups: the two collegiate groups; Elements of Sound, the TrebleMakers, and three a cappella ensembles from the St. Anne's-Belfield Upper School Choir; and Voices of Men and Pride of Cecelia from Culpeper High School.

Sanders Wins at NATS Competition

St. Anne's-Belfield senior Courtney Sanders recently sang at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Virginia State Competition. Courtney placed first, with honors, in the Classical Category and second, with honors, in the Musical Theater Category.

Courtney's achievements qualify her to advance to the Regional NATS Competition to be held in Charleston, S.C. next month.

TrebleMakers Receive CARA Nomination

The TrebleMakers, St. Anne's-Belfield School's all-female a cappella group comprised of singers in grades nine through twelve, have been nominated for a Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award (CARA) in the category of Best High School Song. CARAs are awarded by The Contemporary A Cappella Society, a national organization for the promotion of contemporary a cappella music at the professional, collegiate, and high school levels.

The TrebleMakers' recording of U2's MLK was one of five songs selected for the nomination from across the country. This honor follows Elements of Sound's nomination in the same category last year for their recording of Just What I Needed. The winner and runner up of this year's award will be announced on April 5th, 2013. This year's nominations are listed on The Contemporary A Cappella Society's website.

STAB Student Receives National Honors Choir Recognition

STAB Senior, Nikkita Briones, was recently accepted as a member of the National Honors Choir. Over 3,600 singers from around the country auditioned and only 17% were accepted. Nikkita and other members of the National Honors Choir will perform at the American Choral Directors Associational National Convention in Dallas, TX March 13-16, 2013.
