This year's Upper School Moving Up Chapel, held on May 10, 2013, featured seniors Evan Moore-Coll and Katie Leiner as the speakers. The chapel concluded with the traditional changing of seats to signify students' progression to the next step in their academic lives, from seniors vacating their auditorium seats just as they will soon depart from St. Anne's-Belfield School, to eighth graders being welcomed to the auditorium as next year's freshmen.

Karine Boulle Honored with 2013 Golden Apple Award

Middle School French Teacher Karine Boulle is this year’s recipient of the Golden Apple Award. This award is presented to outstanding teachers in Charlottesville and Albemarle County's public or private schools. St. Anne's-Belfield School nominated Karine for all she does to make French come alive in grades 5-8. Upon entering her classroom, students are transported to a French cafe where they read, write, and speak French.

Karine has consistently high expectations for herself and her students, who she encourages and challenges to take risks. On several occasions she has led student groups to Quebec and France, and each year French 5 students perform a play for fourth graders. In all her classes, she incorporates technology to enhance student learning. This year, French 8 students skyped with another school, and designed, wrote, published, and produced an French-language app named 2Lingua Kids that was accepted by the Apple Store.

Congratulations, Mme. Boulle!

On Wednesday, May 8, the Middle School choirs performed a concert with a Native American theme. After a prelude of Native American songs performed by the fifth grade (including a hoop dance), the sixth grade choir and Saintly Voices joined together to perform Thunder of Horses, a children's opera with music by Cary John Franklin and Michael Patrick Albano.

The opera is loosely based on a Blackfoot legend which explains the origin of the first horses through the story of Long Arrow and Willow Flower, two orphaned children. Over the course of a long journey with many challenges, Long Arrow is transformed into a young brave who brings the rare and valuable gift of magnificent horses to his people.

The concert featured special guest artists including Chris Owens, baritone; Shelby Sander, pianist; I-Jen Fang, percussion; and Elizabeth Brightbill, flute player.
