Community Service
A commitment to community, at home and abroad.
Community Service is an integral part of a St. Anne’s-Belfield School education and an important facet of school life. In many ways, St. Anne’s-Belfield students reach out to the greater Charlottesville community and beyond. Through Community Service, we hope to assist students in developing an awareness of their responsibility to their school and community. Community Service can also broaden the students’ education by encouraging their involvement with those in need.
We see our service program as a manifestation of what we teach in Chapel and of our own affirming community. Upper School students complete a minimum of 15 hours of community service per year. Some of the service initiatives and projects we do include: joining the Boys and Girls Club bike rally; knitting caps for the needy; collecting food to assist families through the food bank; the Angel Tree Christmas project; our school-wide recycling initiative; providing supplies for Meals on Wheels; raising money for cancer research, the SPCA, the Red Cross, and the Heifer project; participating in the Alzheimer’s walk; and sending unclaimed clothing to street children in Soweto.
As a full school community, we host events that see students, parents, faculty, and administration working together to make a difference in the lives of others, including cross-divisional events such as Earth Day, Walk for Kids, Blood Drive, and Dance Marathon. Our community sponsors clubs such as Habitat for Humanity, Saints March for Books, Peer Health Educators, and International Relations, which work throughout the year building both our school community as well as those of our neighbors. Our students and faculty routinely tutor their peers at St. Anne’s-Belfield School and throughout the local public schools. Additionally, our freshmen class will spend a week together on a service learning trip designed to instill the importance of service while having a class bonding experience as they begin high school. Bridging the multitude of divisions that make us individuals, our Community Service program is a unifying force in the life of our school.
