St. Anne's-Belfield School's Artist-in-Residence Sculpture to be Dedicated Oct. 20

Charlottesville, Va., Oct. 13, 2017 – Charlottesville artist John Rubino served as the St. Anne's-Belfield School Artist-in-Residence for the 2016 – 2017 school year, and worked with students to create a sculpture that captures their stories and emotions about the School. The result, "Engage," will be permanently installed in the Chandler Courtyard of the Learning Village and dedicated on Oct. 20, 2017.

Rubino's work on the piece spanned the entire school year, from visiting students in September and October to collect concepts, to designing the sculpture in the winter, and finally creating the sculpture throughout the spring.

"We were really looking for someone who would take ideas and work with the kids in a way that made them feel invested, so that they would end the year knowing what the creative process is like and that it can be different every time," said Kim Cox, grades Kindergarten through three and seven and eight visual arts teacher and member of the Learning Village Sculpture Committee.

Rubino, a University of Miami (Florida) graduate who also studied at The Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy, has been a celebrated artist himself since he was a child, showing his first works at New York's Mari Galleries when he was just 15. Today several of his free-standing sculptures stand in IX Park, while other works are represented in private collections across the nation as well as in public installations in the northeast.

"To be able to offer our elementary and middle school students the opportunity to work with such a fine artist and become involved in the creation of an entirely new work of art has been remarkable," said Learning Village Arts Department Chair Victoria Redfearn Cave.

"The dedication will be the culmination of a great deal of creativity, excitement, energy, and of course hard work."
