Sept. 23 She Started It

ESTEAM Summit for Girls

Charlottesville, Va., Sept. 13, 2017 – St. Anne's-Belfield School is proud to sponsor the She Started It ESTEAM Summit for Girls on Sept. 23.

Inspired by the She Started It documentary on women tech founders in the U.S. and Europe, the event will be a day for local K – 12 girls to enjoy workshops, entrepreneurship challenges, engineering opportunities, a screening of the film, and panelist discussions. Opportunities for career exploration and the chance to network with local female mentors in the fields of entrepreneurship, science, technology, engineering, art, and math will also be available.

The Summit will take place at Albemarle High School, with students in Kindergarten through fifth grade enjoying a program from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., and students in grades six through twelve enjoying activities from 9:00 a.m. -  3:00 p.m.

"We wanted to bring K through twelve girls and their parents together with local stakeholders interested in addressing gender barriers and empowering girls to blaze new trails," said Kim Wilkens, summit organizer and St. Anne's-Belfield's K - 8 Computer Science Program coordinator.

"We're so thrilled with the community response with record interest from girls and their parents, as well as with all the role models, volunteers, and sponsors who have come on board!"

In addition to Wilkens' involvement in the event, St. Anne's-Belfield Head of the Learning Village Shannon Montague will be featured as a panelist during the She Started It screening.

While the Summit itself currently has a registration waitlist, organizers have added a She Started It screening-only option for those who would like to view the documentary and panel discussion with filmmaker Nora Poggi. This screening will take place from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 23 and those interested may register online via esteam4girls.weebly.com.
