Lower School

In the Lower School (Pre-School – Grade 4), our small class size and responsive teachers create an environment where children are encouraged to be curious, to explore, to inquire, and to question.

Children are challenged by a rigorous program that stresses basic skills yet nurtures each child's academic, creative, and social confidence. The stimulating environment of the Lower School, its colorful displays, its charitable and dynamic atmosphere, engage and delight the children who learn and play here. There is an emphasis on caring for each other and acting in a responsible and honorable manner. Teachers strive for an atmosphere that is both challenging and nurturing to ensure that all children complete each day with that genuine confidence that comes from the accomplishments of hard work and the contentment of spirited play.

Pre-school & Kindergarten

Beginning in the Pre-School and continuing through the Kindergarten years, children are encouraged to be curious, to explore, and to question. Students learn and play with language through a variety of methods and materials. They develop an understanding of mathematics through the use of manipulatives and solid representations of abstract concepts. A variety of learning centers on subjects as diverse as computer and dress-up augment the formal curriculum. In a home-like atmosphere, children are encouraged to think of their teachers and their friends as their school family. A friendly and nurturing environment supports our youngest learners as they take their first steps along their educational journey.

Every child in the Lower School studies seven basic subjects: reading, language arts, mathematics, science, history, geography and a modern language. In addition to these seven areas, students also receive instruction in art, music, drama, computers, and physical education. Weekly chapel programs, assemblies, a weekly library period, extra-curricular clubs, and field trips complement the daily schedule.
